Sir Ranulph Fiennes (Ralph to close friends) sawed two of his frostbitten fingers off in his shed with a hacksaw. That's British fighting spirit.
In a similar vein, Pete is going to the gym tomorrow for a punishing work out amidst the Italian muscle boys. Although he is by far the buffest there, he is still pushing his physique to the very limits, inspired by Ralph. Apparently, it's thirty per cent what you lift and seventy per cent what you eat...

So question about buff ralph:
ReplyDeleteHe cut his fingers off in a shed: Where? Why? Presumably there are no garden sheds up kili or k2 or everest or wherever the real need to make an emergency self-op would be, which means he must have waited until he clamboured back down to suburbiaville before he quite deliberately headed to the bottom of his vegetable patch to hack them off rather than heading down to his local A&E like every other sensible person.
Smacks of attention seeking to me...
I actually saw Ralph doing this on TV. His complaint was apparently that he was having to wait until his surgeon thought the time was right ie. needed to know exactly what the frostbite damage was before operating. Ralph being a bit gung ho decided not to wait. For those wanting the technical details, he drank whiskey and clamped his fingers in a vice while he did it, and it was in his garden shed after returning from the Arctic or wherever after a moment of carelessness leaving his fingers out of his gloves a minute or so too long or something! Our kilimango team will not be so careless! All strength to them!
